The War on Drugs

Drugs. They are everywhere. It seems they have proliferated equally to every corner of the globe. If it is illegal, give me a couple hours, and I would likely be able to come back with anything under the sun. It seems the war on drugs has done little to curb the availability of illicit drugs. Unfortunately, I don’t have much of a proclivity towards most mind altering substances. Legal drugs, on the other hand, I am a big fan of. I take them every day. Usually twice a day. They keep me moving and give me hope for the future. They slow the progress of my disease and prevent me from being prematurely wheelchair bound. These drugs, however, are not quite as easy to come by.

Back in the states my precious drugs were sent to me on a monthly basis. However, the pharmacy cannot send prescriptions internationally, so for the last 16 months I have had them sent to my parents. Unfortunately it is illegal for non-medical providers to send prescriptions in the mail, so drugs sitting at my parents doorstep helps me not. My doctor said I should just have my parents send the drugs anyway. I usually take advice from medical professionals, but in this case I was not willing to risk losing a package worth upwards of ten thousand dollars to Customs or clerical errors. Thus, I had to take semi-regular trips to Florida to collect a few months worth of drugs, or have family come deliver them. This was neither cheap, convenient, nor ideal, but it was absolutely necessary. I am simply not willing to see what happens if I go off my drugs. I am incredibly grateful that these drugs exist, that I have insurance to help pay for them (thanks Obama), and that I have such a supportive family that is willing to help me out. I just wish it wasn’t so hard to get my hands on them. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get my fix from the pusher on the corner. In the meantime, my war for drugs continues.
